Field day

We've been counting down the days in our house. Actually two countdowns. End of school, of course. But also for field day.

Trey was excited because he knew what to expect, and oh how this competitive boy adores an entire day of outdoor competition.

Aden has been excited for over a year, since we dropped Trey off for school on last year's field day, when Aden got an eyeful of all the games set up and ready, then proceeded to cry buckets for the entire day that he couldn't stay and play.

They were ready. As was their PTA mom, who thought she knew what was coming. Turns out my prior experiences with field day were a walk in the park compared to the multi-child tracking marathon that was this year.

My station was called "stick it", and the equipment consisted of plastic glasses with a basketball hoop attached to the front, then a basketball on a string that you had to somehow get into the hoop. I got the nerdy basketball game. Mr. Mullins knows his support staff.

Problem was, my helper didn't show up. So instead of us taking turns with the classes that came, I would get the game started, dash off to take a quick run-by photo of Trey or Aden, whichever one I had time to get to, then dash back to help and encourage and make fun of the kids who could take it for looking so silly.

Further problem was, somehow Trey and Aden were constantly on opposite corners of the sprawling school grounds. I ran five miles, y'all. And got terrible-quality pictures. But I'm thankful to have them nonetheless.

Also thankful that the boys had so much fun all day. Enough fun that both of them collapsed into bed early, willingly, on a Friday night. Aden said it was worth the wait, and I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't already counting down the days until next year's field day.

And this is how my kid leaves a station. "Don't touch the flags," they said. "I didn't," he said.

This is Trey's 3rd grade posse, and I wanted to capture it because three of his besties are moving away at the end of this school year. Left to right it's Jesse, Jaxsen, Ethan, Isaiah, Trey, and Laon.
