Six hands

Lately, Trey has been helping us in the garden. Not "helping", but actually helping. While we are picking beans, he stands between the rows and moves the bucket along with us. And if one of us gets too far from the bucket, he will come and get our beans and take them to the bucket.

He also wanted to be involved in snapping the beans, so we sat together and snapped what wound up being five canned quarts. He doesn't quite have the technique down yet, but he would snap each one and then hand it to me, saying "Hee go, Mommy" (here you go), and I would break the ends off.

I know the "helping is fun" stage won't last forever, but we are so glad to have an extra pair of hands willingly and enthusiastically helping us out in the garden.

The true test will come in the next several days as the corn comes in. Praise the Lord, except for the handful of stalks that our friendly neighborhood raccoon has torn down, it all looks very healthy. After having only enough corn for 4 meals last year, we are so excited about this.

But I imagine Trey will be able to help us in this too, for as much as he likes tearing things up. If we ever have another child, the poor soul won't have a single flap to raise up on any book. Anyway, Trey will likely get a kick out of tearing the shucks off the corn. We'll see.

Do your kids still like to help? What do they like to help with?

Will loves to help throw things in the trash. It comes in pretty handy when we are trying to straighten things up. He's been very good about only throwing "trash" away, and not anything else. Let's hope it stays that way.

Ellie likes to do almost any job I can cone up with for her. She especially likes to put away her and Abram's folded laundry, she helps put clean silverware into the drawer and move things I am cutting up for dinner from the cutting board into a pot. Also, getting things I need for Abram, like a clean diaper or fresh clothes. I too am trying to make the most of the willingness to help stage.

(Not mine, but babysitting counts too, right? - Gotta put those boogers to work & keep them occupied! ) Haha. Nevaeh LOVES to know she's helping, so she's awesome with everything! She loves to carry bags if you've been to the store ( light ones, of course). Also, she enjoys helping with Zoe (the dog). If she can feed her or give her fresh water, it makes her day. I also kept a 1 year old about a month or so ago, and he loved laundry. I would hold him and let him pick things up and literally throw them in the washer or hand him things from the washer to throw into the dryer. He was tickled- it was like basketball to him. He was also enthusiastic over trash... He would throw his dirty diapers away without me asking. I love that age!!! (:
