Trey lately

Time is moving so fast. Is it being older? Is it having kids? Is it not wanting time to move fast?

I can barely keep up with Trey anymore, and not just because I have turned into a five-foot weeble with legs. He is growing up so quickly. And as we dig out baby stuff, it is a constant reminder that pretty much every piece of baby is now gone from Trey.

This is a little sad. No, quite sad. Sometimes I just get all weepy, and even though it physically hurts to hold him, that's all I want to do.

Anyway, enough sap.

Thought I'd post a little update on what Trey's been up to lately, lest we forget. Which I am inclined to do. The hospital called me the other day because I had not sent in my preregistration forms, which had been given to me at my first doctor visit for this pregnancy. Oops. Second child.

Trey is a Puggle no more. Last night was his last Awana class of the year. In September he will be a Cubbie. (sniff)

He has done very well in Puggles, learning stories and songs about Jesus. And cleaning up is a very important time in Puggles each week, so sometimes when we need to clean up at home, we pretend like we are in Puggles class.

His role as helper around the house has exploded to new levels. He is very good to help with everything laundry-related, putting groceries away, watering plants, setting the table, and his new favorite - food prep.

Trey gets a chair or stool to stand at the counter when I am working on meals, to help with whatever I ask of him. He can at least partially make his own lunch, putting together a turkey sandwich and getting grapes and cucumbers out of the fridge. He loves rolling sugar cookie dough into balls, helping to ice cupcakes or spread jelly on toast, operating the microwave...

I am LOVING this phase! Hope it doesn't end. Hope it extends and that he is just as excited to help with Baby Dolphin.

Somewhere in the last month or so we hit a growth spurt. Height-wise at least. His weight seems to be pretty steady. But all of a sudden last fall's jammie pants are at least two inches short. We've scheduled his three-year checkup (sniff) for July, so it will be neat to see how much he's grown.

Trey has been calling us by our first names. I guess he must have picked this up from listening to others, as Brandon and I pretty much call each other "Hey". The irony is, when others use our first names, Trey is quick to say, "No, you call him DADDY!" or "No, you call her MAMA!"

The idea of the baby seems to be more real to Trey now that the nursery is put together. The day we put the crib up, Trey said, "This is my crib. This is where Baby Dolphin sleeps." And the baby toys have been given new life. Trey loves going through the nursery closet, pulling out all the rattles and teethers, pushing the walker around (his "stroller"), and sitting in the bouncy seat.

Last week Trey and Brandon were in the living room, and Trey was sitting in the bouncy seat. Brandon said, "You know when Dolphin comes, you'll have to share that with him." Trey answered, "Yeah, you right."

I'll leave you with a funny. And just so you don't think we're teaching him weird things, I have absolutely no clue where this came from.

This morning I was getting Trey dressed, and while his shirt was off, he was looking down at his chest. He points to his nipples.

Trey: These are my nipples.

Mama: Yes.

Trey: I have two nipples.

Mama: You do. God gave you those nipples.

Trey: To keep me safe!
