Twelve years old

My Trey turned twelve today. I say it with every year and milestone, but it's so hard to believe we're here.

We've been remembering, at various times of yesterday and today, what all was going on twelve years ago then. So precious to relive that time, a difficult and beautiful day that grew our family and changed all of our lives forever.

This kiddo has matured by leaps and bounds over the last year. Emotional drama is the exception rather than the rule. His disposition is steady and upbeat. Smart and intuitive, Trey has started reading situations and considering others before deciding how to act.

He still talks as much as ever, the long and winding and heavily detailed stories captivating all of us. He remembers things from years gone by that we have all forgotten, and always enjoys a tale of some of his younger antics. He is loud and expressive, and holds little back.

Trey's sense of humor is unmatched. Mercy, he cracks us up every day. From a snide comment to his apparently inherited sarcasm, random dancing to good-natured ribbing. And it makes him so happy when we are laughing. Almost by accident, he has developed a character impersonation of a ditzy teenage girl named Marissa. Y'all, it is flat hilarious.

As part of his self-declared stand for his generation, Trey is addicted to video games. Screens are really the only source of contention we have, as he could spend twenty-four hours a day playing Fortnite, and it still wouldn't be enough. His talkativeness, volume, and humor flow through the microphone of his headset as often as he is allowed to play, while anyone nearby gets to experience the latest in tween lingo.

Ah gotchoo, fam.

Fairly certain this means, I will help you because we are friends.

Oh, my Trey. He is so stinking tall. Two or three inches higher than me, at least shoulder level to his dad and quickly gaining on his grandparents. The change is underway, his voice lowering, shoulders widening, and, to the horror of his brother, armpits sprouting. All I can do is shake my head, knowing this is just the beginning.

He eats well, gets bored easily, and is a fantastic helper. He's quick in the kitchen and good with landscaping. We learned over the last school year that responsibility is not his forte. Something to work on. Screens have stolen a good deal of his creativity. Something else to work on.

But what an amazing season we are in with this young man. Change will be a constant over the next several years, but we trust the Lord over and over with our Trey, that God will guide his steps and guard his heart.

Happy birthday, Trey!
