Living history

We have had some unique opportunities this month for the boys to experience American history firsthand.

I went with Aden on his field trip to the Avoca house and museum in Altavista. The home dates back to the Revolutionary War, though the house burned down a few times and was last rebuilt in 1901. We were able to see the various outbuildings, learn how food was prepared, and about clothing, daily activities, and weapons of the day. Very interesting indeed.

Then Giga went with Trey on his field trip to the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton. This was a working farm, where they saw all kinds of animals and tools, and learned how life was done on a farm so long ago, without our modern conveniences. BFF Aaron stuck close by Trey! And so glad Giga could go along for some time with her biggest boy.

Finally, Giga whisked the boys and me away on a long weekend trip to Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. We all enjoyed the experiences and many sights we saw, despite some very chilly weather and an attitude or two. Being reminded of how our country began was both refreshing and humbling, especially considering the condition of America lately. We take our independence for granted so easily.

Native American village at Jamestown.

Making cornmeal.

Target practice with corncobs.

Entering the fort at Jamestown.

Getting ready to explore the three ships.

Only photo I got at Yorktown. So cold, we didn't make it to the battlefield!

Colonial Williamsburg. Love.

Walking the old streets, hot cider in hand.

I love this place. One of my favorites on the planet.

Of course there had to be a little goofing off too. In return for the grownups having some shopping time, the boys got the rare privilege of some cold-weather swimming! Indoors, of course.

Yankee Candle Village was amazing!

This may have been the highlight of the trip for the boys.

Juuust a bit of attitude.

A fantastic trip (thank you so much, Giga) and a month full of history and fun.
