The first grader
Well, here goes the world's worst first-day-of-school blog post. Ever.
Days late, a whopping three mostly-crummy pictures, and one mostly-crummy video chock full of one-word responses from my suddenly and very uncharacteristically quiet boys. Seriously, that's all I've got. The morning was a blur.
Despite vowing all summer long that he most certainly would not be attending school this year, Trey was beyond ready to go back when the time came. Meet-the-teacher night did him in, as Trey basked in the glow of having his very own individual desk, sitting with a sweet little girl who has been with him since the beginning of preschool, and meeting his wonderful teacher who also has food allergies! The kid was pumped.
Our major concern was finding out that the first grade classes met in a building behind the school, which meant that Trey would face a rather long, lonely walk on his first day. That night, as we traced the steps together until he was sure which way he should walk, in an almost-whisper he said, "This makes me kinda nervous."
The nerves were short-lived, as arrangements were made for Trey and his best bud Spencer to make the walk together. And now I'm told the long walk is one of the best parts of the day. Or maybe it's that the long walk is the only part of the day we've been told about. Trey has always been secretive about what goes on at school. I'm trying to believe this is OK.
Anyhoo, this first-grader is doing just fine.
Fine as far as school goes, anyway. We are having other issues with Trey, of the control variety, that have left me an exhausted mess. This is a post for another time, once the sting has worn off (assuming it ever does) and I can find a way to express what needs expressing and suppress what needs suppressing.
Another time. For now, we are super-proud of Trey's school bravery and looking forward to watching him learn more and more. Love you, Trey!
