Welcome to fall

In honor of today's high temperature of 50°, thought I'd offer up our family's fall ingredient list. Things that, without fail, accompany peas-and-corn and fiery red leaves. At least for us.

Stink bugs. The bane of my existence. Awful, disgusting creatures who fly clumsily and spray their vomit-inducing teal-green serum all too easily. Back in the sixties when our house was last sealed to the elements, I'm sure they weren't a problem. Fifty years later, my record stands at 37 stink bugs killed in the kitchen within a three-hour span.

Sickness. All of us have been a tad under the weather over the last couple of weeks. Poor Aden seemed to have a really hard time getting over his, with a cough that lingered long after his fever broke and he rediscovered his playful energy. Finally took him to the doctor to discover he has pneumonia. Yep. Kid doesn't do anything halfway, even being sick.

(In a related note, stay tuned to find out if vinegar will get puked-up Oreo stains out of carpet!)

The sports gear-up. Brandon is working school football games and in the swing of basketball open gyms. We're hoping to make it to a college game, for which Trey will be beside himself with excitement. And new this year, just this past Saturday we signed Trey up for rec league basketball, beginning in December. He is pumped, while Mama is just praying that his asthma will actually let him participate.

Drain-the-bank. How, and why on earth is it that our car insurance, homeowners insurance, and personal property taxes hit on the same month? Ugh.

Costume drama. Aden's costume is set, as he'll wear one of Brandon's old costumes, also modeled by Trey when he was two. Trey wants to be Alvin this year (as in Chipmunk). School sends a letter home stating that kids may dress up on the 31st, but only as a character in a book they own. Yeah, we don't own a Chipmunks book. Do we buy one, if such a thing exists? Do I try to convince him to be something else? The thought of needing to make two costumes for a holiday I despise just chafes me to no end.

Soup. Sooooooooouuuuuup. Ah yes, Mama is very happy. Veggie, Italian, sausage & black-eyed-pea, potato, even chicken noodle in a can. Slap on a grilled cheese and mercy me, dinner is done. If you have a good soup recipe, I'll take it.

The doggone heat. Since being pregnant with Aden, I have never lost my hot-naturedness. We had to turn the furnace on last night, as the outside temp was 44° when I went to bed. Sweating within minutes. Something is wrong with me.

So that's a glimpse of life around here. Seems I should probably add "not blogging" as an item, but really, I'm going to try to keep up. Try.
