The tall one

So we took a few movies the other night, just of life going on in our home. We're not doing too hot with capturing Aden on video. The first time we filmed him, he was 11 weeks old. Nice. And the video camera has only been out a couple of times since then.

Nice.

Love you buddy!

But I went to watch the movies we took, and scrolling back through there were movies there from summer '09. (Yeah, not too hot on clearing off the video camera either.)

And I was floored at how Trey has changed. And I didn't even notice!

From a baby face to a kid face. From the slightest baby pudge to lean and very tall. From broken speech and short phrases to nonstop run-on sentences and only missing the "L" sound. In just one year.

Oh my baby...

So this is about Trey. A post mainly for me. Because by fall '11 I will have forgotten what my boy was like in fall '10.

Self-entertaining. This is a complete 180 from where we were, even up until Aden was born. He can disappear into a room and just play. Talking to himself (and Abby the Dinosaur, of course), pretending all sorts of things.

Creative. Oh the things he can think of. He plays school and doctor and mechanic and carpenter and farmer and chef and racecar driver... I love, love, love to listen in when he is playing by himself. So funny and sweet.

Polite. At least outside the home. We're working on please, thank you, and asking rather than demanding. He is very good about sharing and not too shy to say hello to anyone.

Helpful. He will do most anything you ask him to. Loves getting groceries and putting them away, loading and unloading the dishwasher, helping with laundry, even entertaining Aden when he's fussy.

Energetic. This is one thing that hasn't changed. Trey runs fast everywhere he goes, plays hard constantly, dances enthusiastically, and speaks loudly. Giving up naps hasn't slowed him down one bit. Bedtime and wake-up time are the same as they always were. I know he's not getting enough sleep for a kid his age, but it seems to be the amount of sleep he thinks he needs. And he's doing well.

Healthy. We took Trey off his asthma medicine in July, and he held steady until the beginning of September. Not sure what happened then, but we started having to give him his inhaler sometimes two or three times a day. Went back on the Singulair earlier this month, and voila, inhaler no longer needed. So the asthma is there, but controlled, praise the Lord.

Picky. Gets this one honest. Diet consists of fruit, toast, turkey sandwiches, chicken nuggets, cucumbers, fries, Oreos, fruit snacks, occasional potatoes and green beans. And toss in a random food every now and then. Won't try anything new. Our only consistent meal is lunch. Has a tendency to skip the others.

Potty trained. No accidents in a long, long time. Except for overnight. Any suggestions?

Super-devoted grandson. This kid is attached at the hip to his grandpas. Cries inconsolably whenever he has to leave their presence. I love this. Not that he cries, but that he loves them so much and gets to have much-needed man time.

Loving. Will snuggle most anytime. Hugs his brother. Tells us that he loves us. Loves to be nuzzled and tickled and rassled. Seems to be very secure in our love for him, even when he is being disciplined. Praise the Lord for that.

Learning. Thanks to preschool, Trey now knows his colors. He has known numbers, letters, and shapes for a long time, but colors were more of a challenge. We had almost convinced ourselves that he was color blind. But he does know them. And now he is showing interest in the days of the week and traffic laws. Whatever works.

Growing. Trey is tall. This makes for an interesting situation at our house, because when something needs to be placed out of Trey's reach, it pretty much will be out of my reach too. Yeah, stop laughing. He is heavy and solid and no longer a baby by any means. By this coming spring we will move out of the "T" sizes.

My tall one, my first baby, growing and changing too fast for me to keep up.

Swiftly fly the years...

Hey - what about the way he loves his giga and nana??? :) Really - it is so sweet to see him loving time with his grandpas; he has both of them wrapped!
