Trey and Mama, part 2

So last night's Trey and Mama time had an unexpected and very welcome guest...Dad! When Brandon found out Trey and I would be having dinner with his parents, and I texted him a guilt-trip-ish "we'll miss you", he decided to opt out of his school responsibilities and come home to us. He's got it bad.

We ended up spending most of the evening at Nana and Granddad's, which was great. There's lots of neat stuff for Trey to do at Nana and Granddad's...

They have skylights, all the better to find the moon.

This is the only couch Trey can climb onto, with his short little legs.

Basketball with Dad is always a blast.

Love the family.

After we got home we played for a little while. Brandon fixed my washing machine - what a man! And then after Trey went to bed I put the finishing touches on my grocery list.

I'm on a kick this year of being more responsible. This takes the form of making an attainable budget, spending money more wisely, and getting our finances organized. That last one has been a bear, as I am working on getting together every account we have with numbers, payment schedules, contact information, etc. in the case that the Lord calls me or both of us home. A little morbid, but necessary.

For the money-saving/budgeting, one key area we're trying to cut back is groceries. My goal is to spend $75 per week (or less), including diapers. And praise the Lord, we have actually kept to that so far this year! Last week, I got away with spending only $52!

I wish the goal could be less than $75, but I can't seem to make that work. One reason is milk. Brandon and I drink 2 gallons per week, and Trey is fast approaching 1 gallon per week himself. And his milk has to be soy, which is ex-pen-sive. So at least $12 per week goes to milk.

Anyway, in making my list last night I decided to allow myself to go over by about $10, for the following reasons:

- Cereal stock-up. There is a great sale on right now, and I have several ridiculous coupons that will end up putting the price of each name-brand box at $0.65. Woo hoo!

- Meat. Pork chops and chicken are on sale. We don't get these very often, but I decided it would be nice to bring home a few pounds and freeze them, then we can have some over the course of several months. Spring is around the corner, which means grilling season. My husband can work wonders with a grill.

- We are providing breakfast in Sunday school this week, which means having enough food for around 15 people for one meal.

It's like a little adventure every week, combining sales and coupons, trying to find a way to go to the grocery store by myself so no - ahem - unexpected items show up in the cart. Who knew saving money could be so interesting? And it's worth it too. It would be a great life skill to teach Trey. We pray that he will grow up to be a frugal, responsible person.
