The first step

So the moms reading this blog are going to think we're crazy, and Trey's doctor would probably have us shot. The information sheets we get at every appointment say "delay potty training until at least age 2". But we bought a potty.

I know what you're thinking - Trey turns 20 months next week. It's way too early, especially for a boy. But I guess we figured it couldn't hurt. For the last month or so, Trey has been telling us right before he would go #2, and sometimes for #1 also.

I'll be the first to admit I've not read the first potty training book or article. The main thing I have been hearing from everywhere is that he has to be "ready". Maybe he's not ready, but surely identifying urges is a good start.

So anyway, Trey has been introduced to his own potty, and we're working on association right now. Yesterday he said the word for #2 and got that look on his face, so I took him and set him fully clothed on his potty, and he did his business there.

I have determined not to pressure him at all - Trey has always done things on his own time anyway. Plus this is one of those things I could so easily get stressed out about. So we're starting early and taking it slow.

I won't pretend the long road ahead is easy. Overnights will be a bear. It is an extremely rare morning that Trey does not wake up soaked through his pajamas and sheet. He's a wetter.

Please, please, please feel free to offer advice. I guess I should read some books.

Way to go Trey (and Ashley and Brandon!) Kids are so different, so they potty train differently too...I've never potty-trained a little boy, so I don't have much advice there. Some things we did with Cana that seemed to help is:

We did a sticker chart so that she got to put a sticker on there when she went...

We had 'potty' books at the potty so we could read to her and keep on on the potty long enough to go

We read 'Pottywise'...and the main idea was to praise 'keeping your undies clean and dry,' not just going in the potty. After all, that's the main goal: clean and dry undies. The book was somewhat helpful for us, but not great.

Kayil is 22 months, and she is SO interested in the potty. She is also telling us when she has to go, and she is starting to catch on by watching Cana! I think baby #2 is going to be SO much easier, since Cana is such a great teacher!

I am in total agreement with Kelly. I wasn't even ready for Zeke (our 2nd) to be potty trained but he did it on his own by watching Areyna learn. He was SO easy. Each child is so different so Trey could very well be on his way=)

I didn't read any books but I did search around on the internet a little. We used the naked-all-day approach. Especially in the summer time!
