Six words
That's all it would take if someone should ask how we're doing. Six words.
The Christmas tree is still up.
Ornaments and all. In my defense, every other Christmas decoration has been stored away, including the gorgeous quilted tree skirt my Mama made for me. No skirt makes the tree look a bit strange. But the advent of February also makes the tree look strange, so whatever.
Also in my defense, the tree is in the basement man cave area, so it's not like we're being judged by a bunch of passers-by. It actually seems not to bother us, as the maybe two times we've been home at the same time and purposefully sat down to spend some time together down there, it has provided very nice lighting for us to immediately fall asleep to.
January's kicking my tail, y'all.
Brandon is coming up on the end of a very difficult basketball season. The win/loss record certainly doesn't speak to the team's effort, and they have seemed to improve with each game. The off-court problems, though, have been major trials and opportunities to grow in faith. I can't describe how affected I have been at the way Brandon has handled these, his ultimate trust in the Lord and His work in Brandon's life. It wouldn't be right to say I'm looking forward to this season being over, but I am looking forward to having my husband back.
Trey is blossoming before our very eyes. This wonderful young man, I tell you what. He has become so considerate and helpful, asking about our days and helping out in the kitchen, putting away laundry and randomly yelling hello to us from his room. He's growing and maturing so fast. We laugh over the voice cracks and hairy ankles. When we hug, it's his arms over my shoulders now. Filled out his eighth grade class schedule the other day. Just...wow.
Aden is working hard at school and basketball. He is on a travel team this year, and it has been so good in so many ways. New friendships, building character, and getting into shape. His two tournaments so far have been tough, as his team is still new and learning. But Aden has hung in there so well, executing plays, encouraging his teammates, scoring when he can, and never giving up effort despite the score. Couldn't be more proud of this amazing kid.
I'm taking everything one step at a time, as best I can. Brandon has three games a week and three practices a week. Aden's been having three games each Saturday and two practices a week. Trey is getting passed around to whoever can take him. I have Easter drama rehearsal on Sundays, in addition to the week's job and chauffeuring and cheering and planning and homework-helping and frantically trying to at least do something to our poor neglected house and I have cooked maybe two meals this year.
So yes, the Christmas tree is still up. And that's OK, because it's for very good reason.
