Trey's eleventh birthday

Trey Isaiah is eleven. Eleven years he's been lighting up our lives and making us laugh and lean hard on the Lord.

He is tall and lean with an infectious smile. Active and inquisitive, this kiddo is always moving or singing or dancing and will talk your ever loving ear off.

Trey's storytelling has been a hallmark of his character since he was old enough to put sentences together. He gathers his thoughts out loud before weaving together detail-laden stream of consciousness tales.

We bond over board games and Minecraft. He loves teaching me how to do things and educating me on what the kids are doing and saying these days, since my coolness expired long ago. Apparently it's a major source of laughs when your Mama can't floss right.

In the right mood, Trey has a servant's heart. At VBS this year, instead of tagging along with the younger kids he volunteered with the games and audio/visual crews, toting supplies, editing videos, and squirting water cannons.

If he has a dread of middle school, it is only because summer will be over. He is not at all intimidated by the thought of more people or a bigger place. Honestly, it just seems like a natural progression. It's just time to move on.

Our relationship, complicated as it may be by how alike we are, is very good right now. If my attitude is kept at bay, so is his. We joke and play and every once in a while I get a hug. Which is a full-on chin-over-shoulder-both-ways nuzzle. He's at my hairline now.

As he grows and we grow along with him, change has become constant as the sunrise. He is developing, and it seems there's something new every day. Right now, it's sleep like we've never seen before. Narcoleptic-style drifting off in broad daylight. His body is working overtime and we're along for the ride.

Trey still struggles a bit with his fears, admittedly having trouble with trust and always wanting a safety net. Which has given so very many opportunities to shower love and reassurance on our precious boy who actually really truly does still need us.

Trey Isaiah, you are loved more than you ever know. By your family who have all been over the moon since we met you, and by a God who has plans for your future. We are amazed at who you have become and look forward to seeing who you grow into as we begin a new phase of life. We pray every day that God will bless you and make you strong and courageous. Happy, happy birthday.

A birthday divided in two, Trey's friend party was smaller and decidedly more fun than Aden's party last month. No lacerations, just besties romping at the pool, chowing down on cake, and staying up all night long.

It was the birthday party he wanted, made to order.

And the family party, graciously hosted by Giga, was such a fun, peaceful time of celebrating our boy with a delicious meal and some water balloon fun. Mama forgot the candles, but luckily Giga had kept many of the candles from Trey's prior birthdays and we did our best!

Such a great birthday for such a great kid.
