A ball player is born
This is real ball, y'all. For the last two years, Aden has played team preschool wiffle-ball. But this year, it's real. And no one dares call it tee ball (which it really is), because the star calls it baseball. So baseball it shall be.
Aden was a bit nervous to begin with, but getting out on the field and warming up required no coaxing as it did in basketball. Excitement outweighed the nerves, and the kid did what he came to do.
I tell you what, we're his parents and all, but our little ball player put on a show in the outfield, slurping up all but one of the couple dozen balls hit his way and using his strong and accurate arm to get the ball to first every time. It was fantastic. I daresay Aden found his niche. And Aden's Daddy so filled with pride that it sent him into a happy dance.
Not kidding.
This was the first of many games over the next several weeks, and we do have things to work on with Aden, so it will be fascinating to see how the season goes. But the main takeaways from game one:
- Mad skills.
- I'll be the mom sitting with her face pressed against the chain link fence at every game. I have no idea how to photograph well from the bleachers with the fence in between.
- As good as white pants look, and baby they are sharp, it's a travesty. Laundry is a great nemesis for me. Couldn't bring myself to just buy one pair of those pants for each game of the season, so my next six weeks will be spent kneeling by the bathtub mumbling Christian curses and scrubbing with blood-raw hands with the goal of even just a subtle ecru. If the first game is any indication of things to come, something's gotta give. Thirteen years of fighting a white pants battle may just do me in.
OK, on to the good stuff.
Warming up
First at-bat
Taking off for second
Crossing the plate
To the infield
Coach pep talk
Digging in
Charging the ball
Snagged it
Grabbing another one
Throwing to first
On deck
The level swing
Coach Lee talks him up
Trying coach-pitch
Another hit off the tee
A solid single for the slugger
Had a blast. Go little eagles!
