Making progress

So they're a little staged, this week's round of doing-their-thing pics.

It's my blog and I'll stage if I want to. Stage if I want to. Stage if I want to.

In all honesty, I was fairly certain there wouldn't be photos this week, as it was packed completely full. Five basketball games and then church stuff. Some local flooding gave us one night at home, and very close to bedtime I realized this was my only shot. Whipped out the phone, begged them to stand still for just one second, please, and snapped exactly two photos.

This boy has kicked himself into high gear school-wise. In half a grading period, he has pulled up his language and writing grade by ten points, won third place in the spelling bee, and received a perfect score on his first ever stand-up-in-front-of-a-class oral presentation on his Poppop's turquoise antique car named Betsy.

As if that wasn't enough good news, the kiddo is starting to like me again. We've sort of had a rough go of it, well, since Aden was born. Little by little, I'm noticing more and more hugs and smiles coming my way. Twice this week he has sat down at the table just to talk to me. Oh, son, I've missed you.

And then this boy just passed his hundredth day of Kindergarten, and commemorated the occasion by counting to 100 by tens, fives, and ones. The day didn't quite turn out as he had planned, though, based on our conversation before bed that night.

Mama: Time for bed, gotta get up early tomorrow morning.

Aden: No I don't. I'm not going to school tomorrow.

Mama: What? Why?

Aden: (eyebrows raised, tilted head wagging, and grand hand gestures) Today was the hundredth day! There's no more school. I'm done!

Mama: Oh babe, not quite. School keeps on going til it's almost summertime.

Aden: Are you KIDDING me?

Bless his heart. He's been working so hard in school, catching on quickly to math and science, and spending a lot of time on reading and writing. He's getting there.

Side note: Take a look at the eyes in that picture. The blue has faded to gray and dark circles have set up camp. My Taz has his first sinus infection. He has become a snotting, crouping shell of his former self. Praying it won't last long.
