Five
Today, my Trey Isaiah is five years old.
How? How??
He is a handsome sweetheart who wins over everyone he meets with his gigantic smile and thick eyelashes. For the most part, at least away from home, he is quite polite and considerate.
He is musical, loves to dance, and does a killer version of "Heartbreak Hotel". Says he wants to learn to play guitar like Daddy, but has no desire whatsoever for his Mama to teach him to play piano.
Is just a bit Type A. Thrives on a schedule, loves repetition and knowing what to expect. Worries himself silly over what times certain things will be done.
Since preschool ended, Trey has changed quite a bit. The loss of socialization and mental stimulation has created a monster. He is a spaz. Talks. All. Day. Long. Allllll. Daaaaaaaaay. Loooooooonnnnnng. Flits here and there and everywhere, following around whoever he can find, questioning. "What are you going to do now? Why? Can I come with you? What are you going to do after that?"
Trey has also begun pushing his obedience boundaries. He can be very sassy, has anger issues, and does not like not getting his way. At least for me, discipline has had to morph into time-outs and talking about why what he did was wrong. He often answers these questions correctly, but does not appear to show remorse.
Maintains his fear of being alone. The bedtime issues continue, both in putting him to bed (when he cries until someone will lay with him while he goes to sleep), and in sleeping through the night (he rarely does). Constantly reminds us not to forget him.
In spite of the loss of preschool structure, this summer has been relatively exciting for Trey. He has spent more time with his favorite people in the world (Giga and Poppop, Nana and Granddaddy) than he has with us. Just prefers not to be at home in general.
Does not show much affection to us, unless we are about to leave his presence, when he insists on "a kiss and a hug". Otherwise, tries to squirm free from hugs and wipes off kisses. Will sometimes return an "I love you".
He has grown quite fond of his brother. They enjoy playing together. Trey sometimes gets rough on Aden, and frequently acts out to reaffirm his perceived superiority. But Aden just comes back for more. Sometimes they rassle, and on occasion they will love on each other. Which just melts my heart.
And now that Aden is talking more, Trey will hold funny conversations with him. He's gotta talk to someone, you know.
Eats grape jelly toast for breakfast. Every day. Eats a turkey sandwich and cucumbers for lunch. Every day. Asks for chicken nuggets for dinner. Every day. Loves strawberries, chocolate soymilk, ghirardelli chocolate chips, lemonade, hot dogs, marshmallows, fruit snacks, peaches, cupcakes. Sometimes not the healthiest eater, but a much better and more consistent eater than he once was.
This boy is a great helper when he applies himself. He is capable of so much, and can be quite enthusiastic, especially if the chore means he will be working alongside one of us. Great in the garden, quick with laundry, skilled at cleaning up clutter. Soon he'll be learning to cook!
Trey is so very smart. Reads very well, is a whiz with numbers, and seems to have a good grasp on basic logic. I know he is going to love school, as scared as he is. He will absolutely love it.
My sweet baby Trey, I love you from the top of your head to the bottoms of your feet. The whoooooole Trey. The Lord has grown you so big and smart and full of life. Never lose your enthusiasm, and never doubt how much the Lord loves you and how important you are to this family. We are excited about this next year and can't wait to watch you change and grow even more. We are over the moon for you, little man. Happy birthday!
